Greece & Brazil

August 1, 2016

With the Olympics coming up, there are two very important flags you will see for two weeks: The flags from Greece and Brazil. This is because Greece is where the Olympic movement was born wgr46hf_-00_greece-flag-4-x-6-inchand Brazil is where the 2016 edition of the Olympics are held.

The current version of the Greek flag has nine horizontal stripes, blue and white. On the left hand corner is a blue square and a white cross. This flag was adopted on December 22, 1978. Earlier versions were adopted by the First National Assembly of Epidaurus on January 13, 1822. The nine stripes are believed to represent the symbols in the Greek battle cry, “Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος” (Eleutheria H Thanatos), which translates to “Freedom or Death”, which was said during the Hellenic Revolution against the Ottoman Empire. This flag is referred to as the “Κυανόλευκη” (Kyanólefki) or “blue-white” in Greece. The white symbolizes clouds in the sky, waves in the sea, and perpetual progress.

Trivia: Greek Flag Day is October 27.

The most recent Olympics held in Greece was in 2004 in Athens, the same city where the very first Olympics were held in 1896.

Brazil adopted its flag on November 19, 1889 but was updated on May 11, 1992. Brazil’s flag is green with a yellow rhombus with a dark blue circle in the middle with 27 stars (originally 21 stars) wbr46hf_-00_brazil-flag-4-x-6-inch-stick-flagand a white band, reading “Ordem e Progresso”, meaning Order and Progress, the national motto in green letters. The stars in the blue circle symbolize a starry sky but the stars also represent the country’s federated units, every star a single state, including the federal state.

The Brazilian flag was designed by Raimundo Texeira Mendes along with Miguel Lemos, Manuel Pereira Reis, and Décio Villares at the request of the then provisional president, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca. This was after Brazil had become a republic after being a constitutional monarchy.

Fact: The 2016 Olympics is the first to be held in South America.

Soccer: Brazil has won the most World Cups in soccer, with five wins. Brazil has many superstars including Pelé, who helped in the bid to win Brazil the right to host the Olympics.ac

State Post – Arkansas

December 10, 2015

sar35i_3x5_arkansasHalfway through the State Flag series and at the 25th state is Arkansas. Although founded by Spanish settlers (most famously Hernando De Soto), Robert LaSalle claimed the land for France in 1682. Henri DeTonti established the first European settlement in Arkansas in 1686 in the lower Mississippi River Valley, in which the settlement was known as Arkansas Post (Poste aux Arkansas in French). Arkansas was later obtained with the Louisiana Purchase through France in 1803.

The state flag of Arkansas is red with a diamond in the center. The diamond is white and outlined with a blue stripe along with twenty-five white stars, each representing the then-twenty five states in the nation. Written inside the white diamond is the word Arkansas and four separate stars, all blue. The three stars below the state’s name symbolize the three countries who once owned the state, Spain, France, and the US. The star above is their membership in the Confederacy. The reason for the diamond shape is because Arkansas is the only US state in which diamonds have been found. (Mount Ida is the Quartz Crystal capital of the world).

How did Arkansas get named? The name Arkansas means “South Wind” but it was also a named used to describe a local tribe, Quapaws. Several people had different pronunciations of the name, ranging from Oo-ka-na-sa to Arkensa. It was Arkansas at the time of its admission into the Union.

Presidential Births: William Jefferson Clinton aka Bill Clinton, who was the 42nd President of the United States, was born in Hope, AR on August 19, 1946. Before he was president from 1993-2001, he was previously the governor of Arkansas from 1979-1981 and again from 1983-1992.

Stop – hockey time!

September 25, 2014

canadiensIt is officially HOCKEY season. For those of you that are hockey fans, well, you already understand the excitement I feel! I was going to write about the Original 6 but I would be leaving out so many worthy franchises. For those of you that do not follow Hockey well I am sorry. Being a hockey fan is not like a fan of any other sport, I mean we have our own language! EX: Celly, Hatty, Hoser, Puck Bunny and Bucket, need I say more?

red wingsFor me and my house we are Red Wing fans. The winner of 11 Stanley Cups and 24 appearances at the play-offs. Yes we are those crazy fans! My oldest daughter graduated Kindergarten on the day Detroit had a parade for the Wings for winning the Stanley Cup that year (1997) we went to the parade. No I did not miss graduation but we did leave early!

bruinsThe top teams for appearances and their wins are as follow: Montreal Canadiens 24/24, Detroit Red wings 24/11, Toronto Maple Leafs 21/13, Boston Bruins 9/6, Chicago Blackhawks 12/5, New York Rangers 11/4, Philadelphia Flyers 8/2, Edmonton Oilers 7/5, New York Islanders 5/4, New Jersey Devils 5/3 and Pittsburgh Penguins 4/3. In all that is some impressive stats.

I moved this past winter back home to the south. There is flyersnot a close NHL team but we do have the Pensacola Ice Flyers, they are members of the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Ice Flyers name comes about two-fold, 1. a tribute to our heritage for our Naval Air station home of the Blue Angels 2. for the original owner Tim Kerr former NHL player for 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers.

I am very excited to experience this new team of hockey players in my home town, BUT are they ready for me?

NHLPIT_-00_black-gold_front_Pittsburgh-Penguins-Banner-Flag_4Editor’s note: as my BF’s daughter is heavily into hockey here in PA (you will know this if you follow our blogs on SafetyGirl, Discount Safety Gear, or Construction Gear) as a player, I feel instrumental in Jacquie not writing about the Original 6. 🙂

Tailgating Flagpoles

November 23, 2010

You’re all set to host a great tailgate party—you’ve packed your food, drinks, games, music, flag—but you’re missing something. How will you sport your flag? A Tailgating Flagpole from the U.S. Flag Store is the best way to show off your team or favorite driver at your tailgate party!

The Tailgating Flagpole Kit comes with everything you need to fly your favorite flag next to your car at your tailgate party. The Tailgating Flagpole Kit is complete with a sixteen- or twenty one-foot telescoping fiberglass flagpole, a flagpole car stand, and two nylon ties to attach your favorite flag.

The 20’ Sporting Event Flagpole is a great choice for a tailgating flagpole.  Made from lightweight silver anodized aluminum, this flagpole is light yet sturdy and collapses to just forty inches. The flagpole adjusts to flags sizes ranging from 1’ x 2’ to 3’ x 5’. This flagpole won’t let you down at any tailgating party, parade, or stadium event.

If you opt for the lightweight aluminum flagpole, you’ll need a Tailgate Stand to complete your setup. Using the weight of your car the Tailgate Stand sits underneath your car tire for stability. The Tailgate Stand is made from lightweight aluminum, collapses to just two inches for easy storage, and includes set screws to lock the flagpole in place.

If you’d rather fly your tailgating flag from the back of your car, the U.S. Flag Store offers an Aluminum Trailer Hitch Bracket for your tailgating flag needs. The mount easily slides into your trailer hitch and fits pole diameters of 2 ¼” and 2 ½”. Remember, your vehicle must be stationary for installation and use.

Before you complete your order, be sure to add a Never Furl Kit to your cart. This great little kit allows you to fly a grommet flag and never get it wrapped around the pole. For only $15, you’ll save yourself worries and trouble!
